My apologies for the delayed posting. Life has been hectic as of late – my wife and I just bought a house! I hope to be back to normal posting soon. Here are some miscellaneous tidbits:

– Time is running out to support education with a comment. I must say, I have been pretty disappointed to have zero participants thus far. Take a moment a leave a comment for a good cause!

– I have volunteered to create a website for Tri-BALL-Athon 2009. If anyone is good with graphic design and would be interested in helping out please let me know! It seems like we are always in need of graphic design help and our current resources are overtaxed and unreliable. Anyone with working knowledge of PHP is also welcome to assist.

– We will be serving a lasagna dinner at Shalom House this Saturday as part of our service commitment for the Shalom Outreach Society. If anyone is interested in seeing the shelter or helping out with dinner, leave a comment and I can get you more information.

– I know it is late notice (sorry I just found out today), but there is a job fair currently underway that runs until 2:00 PM today at the St. Ann Community Center. You can find more detailed information here.

I hope all is well with everyone!

Third Friday Event Pictures

Posted by Schevus on March 1, 2009

The Third Friday event for the Shalom Outreach Society went great! There were dozens of people in attendance watching live glassblowing demonstrations and browsing the glass and art displays. We had the opportunity to share information about Shalom House and the Outreach Society with many people.

Third Friday

The great folks at Third Degree did a live auction for a glass piece as it was being made with the proceeds benefiting Shalom House. The winning bid was $140. I would have had this post up sooner, but I was waiting for the pictures of the finished product. Here is a photo timeline of the piece as it was being made (sorry the quality is not the best):

The Third Friday event was a lot of fun and I recommend it if you are looking at something different to do with a Friday night. There is talk that we may be present at future events as well, so look for us!

Shalom Outreach Society Meeting Results

Posted by Schevus on January 16, 2009

We had an excellent meeting last night, with near full attendance from our members. There is much to do for Tri-Ball-Athon 2009, but everything seems much more relaxed this year as we are able to start much earlier than we were last year.

I need to call the parks department to see about getting a field reservation. Hopefully it is not as much hassle as it was last year. We are concerned about getting sponsorship money with the tough economic times, so we will be holding some of our meetings at “targeted” locations to try to influence them to become sponsors.

Our next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 on 12 Feb at Jefferson Bistro. Anyone who is interested in joining (or who might just want to check us out) is welcome to come. This is a social meeting, so it will be a good time for new members to relax and get to know everyone. If you are looking for a fun way to get involved in the community come by and have some good, cheap food and a drink or two.

In addition to planning for Tri-Ball-Athon, we are also looking at doing a service event for the clients at Shalom House. This will provide a good way for Outreach Society members to get to know the clients and really get a feel for what all of our hard work is going toward.

As always, if you are interested or have any questions about Shalom Outreach Society or Shalom House do not hesitate to ask me.

Shalom Outreach Society

Posted by Schevus on November 26, 2008

One of the organizations that I am most active with in St. Louis is the Shalom House Women’s Shelter. Shalom House (formerly known as Metro Homeless Center) provides emergency and transitional housing for homeless women suffering from chemical dependency, substance abuse, and mental health issues. For more information on Shalom House itself, you can visit their website.

Most of the supporters, financial or otherwise, of Shalom House are older and aging. This is true of many of the charities in the city and around the country. Because of this, the staff wanted to find a way to build investment in the organization with younger people in order to provide continuity of support when the older supporters pass on.  Thus, the Shalom Outreach Society was created.

The idea of the the Outreach Society is to bring young professionals together in a more social atmosphere in order to promote advocacy for the shelter, and further build interest among the younger population. The society has a very informal structure, without the designated roles that are found in most similar organizations. We share and rotate the responsibilities of facilitating meetings, attending board meetings for the shelter, etc. This allows everyone to build their leadership abilities, and prevents single points of failure.

The Outreach Society sponsors fund raising events targeting young people to benefit the shelter. Our signature event, which went well this year despite a fast moving weather cell, is the Tri-Ball-Athon. This event consists of teams of up to 10 participating in kickball, volleyball, and bocce ball. There is also music and food and drink vendors, with proceeds going to Shalom House. Next year (2009) Tri-Ball-Athon will be held May 30th in Forest Park.

In addition to Tri-Ball-Athon, the Outreach Society also sponsors at least one other fundraising event a year. This past Thursday we had an awesome happy hour event at Newstead Tower Public House. They graciously donated 25% of all proceeds to Shalom House. We haven’t got totals back yet, but we had a packed house and a great time was had by all.

If you are interested in the Shalom Outreach Society please drop me a note. We are a very friendly and enjoyable group and are ALWAYS looking for new members. Also, please share any stories of organizations for young people that you know of or are a part of (even if they aren’t in St. Louis!!).

Note: Shalom House and the Shalom Outreach Society have no Jewish connection. I’m not saying anything would be wrong with that, just clarifying because that is often a point of confusion.
